research:

serum: topical vitamin c improves sun-damaged skin, reduces wrinkles, and increases collagen production [Fitzpatrick 2002] [Humbert 2003] [Nusgens 2001]. these exact concentrations (15% vitamin c, 1% vitamin e, 0.5% ferulic acid) protected human skin against uv damage, adding to spf rather than replacing it [Murray 2008].

eye cream: hyaluronic acid hydrates: in a 60-day placebo-controlled trial, hyaluronic acid cream improved hydration and elasticity of the skin around the eyes [Pavicic 2011]. coffee bean and green tea extracts contain caffeine, which constricts blood vessels and reduces fluid retention, the mechanism behind depuffing [Hamie 2024].

retinol: in a year-long, double-blind, vehicle-controlled trial, 0.1% retinol reduced fine lines by 44% and mottled pigmentation by 84%, with improvement over placebo at every checkpoint [Randhawa 2015]. a 24-week randomized trial of 0.4% retinol improved fine wrinkles and increased collagen markers in skin biopsies [Kafi 2007]. those trials used 0.1% and 0.4%; ours is 0.7%, released slowly.

spf: daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the most effective graceful-aging product there is. in a 4.5-year randomized trial of 903 adults, daily sunscreen users showed 24% less skin aging than people who applied it only when they remembered [Hughes 2013]. sunscreen blocks uv; antioxidants handle what gets through. wear the serum underneath.

moisturizer: hyaluronic acid hydrates: in a 60-day placebo-controlled trial, hyaluronic acid cream improved skin hydration and elasticity, and low-molecular-weight versions also reduced wrinkle depth [Pavicic 2011]. squalane is the stable form of squalene, about 13% of the oil your skin already makes [Kim 2012]; with jojoba and apricot kernel oil it forms a light lipid layer that slows water loss, which is how moisturizers keep skin hydrated between applications [Lodén 2005].

instructions

morning: serum first, then eye cream, then moisturizer, then spf.

evening: retinol, then moisturizer. start retinol 2-3 nights a week and build up as your skin adjusts. avoid the immediate eye area. do not use retinol if pregnant or breastfeeding.

spf: apply 15 minutes before sun and as needed. reapply after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, immediately after towel drying, and at least every 2 hours.
